Entrepreneur magazine reports that the number of franchise units in the U.S. increased by 11% between 2004 and 2005, nearly three times the percentage of growth that occurred between 2003 and 2004.₁

John Reynolds, President of the International Franchise Association Educational Foundation, reported in the March 2006 issue of Franchising World:

"Current economic conditions are good for franchised businesses and the outlook for the year ahead is very optimistic, International Franchise Association franchisor-members confirmed in a recent Web-based survey…for franchising overall, 70% were positive about the current health of the sector."₂

The Economic Impact of Franchised Businesses, a survey for the International Franchise Association Educational Fund conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers reported that:₃

• Franchises generate jobs for more than 18 million Americans, directly employing 9.7 million people.

• More than 760,000 franchises generated a total economic output of more than $1.53 trillion – nearly 10% of the U.S. private-sector economy
